Reception
Welcome to Reception.
In the Foundation stage there are seven key areas of learning, which are all interlinked:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding of the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
These key themes are taught and underpinned through our topic approach where the children will enjoy practical and hands on learning experiences to help them learn new skills.
During the Autumn term children will enjoy the topics Let’s Explore and Marvellous Machines. Here the children will learn about their immediate environment and the different environments they share with others such as school and their community. They will explore journeys through different texts including ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. Within our Marvellous Machines topic, the children will explore different technology that is part of their daily lives and how machines can help us. The children will have the opportunity to build and create marvellous machines.
In the Spring term our topics are Long Ago and Puppets and Ready Steady Grow. This project teaches children about how life in the past was different from their lives today, by exploring toys and games and talking to grandparents about their lives. The children reflect on their past and discuss how they have changed since they were a baby and share any special memories that they have from growing up. Later in Spring, the children will begin to look at food and farming. They will learn about what constitutes a healthy lifestyle and how they can follow this in their own lives. We will also explore the changes that take place during the Spring season and the festivals that are celebrated at this time of year in our Signs of Spring topic.
Finally, in the Summer term, children will look at Animal Safari where they will learn about animals that live around world including pet animals and safari animals. The children will also learn how to look after different animals and the importance of caring for our environments. Within this term we will also look at On the Beach, which teaches children about the plants and animals that live at the seaside. We also explore holidays in the past and the importance of keeping safe in the Sun.
As well as our wonderful topics we also follow the children’s interests, which are reflected through our child-initiated and adult led activities.
