Throughout the month of October we have been celebrating Black History Month in school.

The theme of this year’s Black History Month was ‘Reclaiming Narratives’. This theme was not just about revisiting history but about taking ownership of the stories that define our culture, our contributions, and our very identity. It was call to action for Black communities across the UK to step into the role of storytellers, historians, and custodians of our heritage.

We began the month with a whole-school worship led by children in our school. This outlined the importance of Black History Month and why we celebrate it each year. It also gave the school community an insight into the people we would be exploring in the following weeks as well as being an invitation for everyone to share their stories with us so that we could start reclaiming the narrative of black history within our school .

We then followed this worship with a range of lessons and activities about our chosen individual. We explored the history of famous and influential black people within our local community. We did this cross-curricular from Art to Guided reading lessons.

Year 1 even created a dance performance when they were exploring Jamelia Davis.
